Colville

Colville was once a busy timber milling town in pioneer days. During the 1970s, it became a magnet for hippies attracted by its natural beauty and isolation. The town of Colville today serves a rural community of farmers and artists.

Taking the road north of Colville, one is treated to spectacular views of the Moehau Range rising steeply from the ocean. In the northern part of the peninsula, Port Jackson has a long, spacious beach where people camp and fish.

There are numerous legends associated with Fletcher Bay, a bay at the top of the peninsula, about shipwrecks, mariners, gold digging, and shipwrecks at sea.

Cape Colville overlooks both Little Barrier Island and Great Barrier Island, as well as the Watchman.

Explore Port Charles, Waikauwau Bay, Little Bay and Kennedy Bay by going north along Colville Bay and crossing the range to the east. An expansive sandy beach is accessible at Waikawau Bay, for instance. The beach is good for swimming, diving and fishing. In the breeding season it is home to New Zealand dotterel and variable oystercatcher birds.

There are several walkways in the area north of Colville, ranging from 20-minute strolls to half-day hikes.
